Nelson Mandela: A brief history for parents
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (1918–2013) is one of South Africa’s most beloved leaders. Born in the small village of Mvezo in the Eastern Cape, he grew up in the traditions of the Xhosa people. His clan name was Madiba, a title of honour still used today to show respect.
As a young man, Nelson Mandela studied law and became a leader in the fight against apartheid – the system of unfair laws that separated people in South Africa by race. Because he stood up for freedom and equality, he was arrested and spent 27 years in prison. Even though those years were difficult, he never gave up hope.
When he was released in 1990, instead of seeking revenge, Nelson Mandela chose forgiveness and peace. Just four years later, in 1994, he became the first Black president of South Africa. His leadership helped bring the country together after many years of division.
He believed in fairness, kindness, and the power of education.
He once said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
By sharing Nelson Mandela’s story with children, we help them understand the importance of standing up for what is right, treating everyone equally, and never giving up hope, no matter how hard things may seem.
